Kemper Crabb returns after his record-breaking PBS Christmas special, DOWNE IN YON FORREST, with RELIQUARIUM, a collection of post-Reformation hymns rendered beautifully strange in a collision of world-wide stylistic influences all existing in the same musical space. For the most part eschewing guitar-driven treatments, these song arrangements are anchored in instruments such as oud, kalimba, dulcimer, bouzouki, theremin, crummhorn, bagpipe, cittern, and other exotic instrumentation (most of which Kemper played himself). Ranging from the epic to the intimate to the cinematic (and all points in between) this project takes the listener on a layered and complex journey through medieval, middle eastern, pop and art-rock landscapes into a transcendent world which fuses the past and present to touch the boundaries of the future. Even if you're not fond of spiritual music, you'll enjoy this enigmatic and uplifting record.
